People will be as you expect them to be. Employees will be as you expect them to be!
I live on the Gold Coast where there are quite a number of tourists. At my local news agents over the years I have heard numerous conversations between the owner and tourists but two stand out for me.
One day a tourists says to the owner “geez people are fun around here! Everyone is bright and bubbly, happy to help out, happy to have a chat” the owner says “yeah I know, that’s pretty much how you will find them :)”
On another day a tourist says “what’s wrong with people around here? They seem so cranky and hard to talk to! They’re not very helpful and don’t seem to care” the owner says “yeah I know, that’s pretty much how you will find them :(”
What the news agent knows, is its not the people its the tourist. If they show up expecting people to be bright, helpful and friendly they pretty much will be. If the tourists show up expecting a bad time they’ll probably get one!
As a leader you need to be careful about what you expect from your team. If you expect them to be tired, cranky and frazzled, I bet they are. If you expect them to be trusting, respectful, innovative, I’m sure they will be. Remarkable leaders are clear on what their expectations are and their employees rise to those expectations.
