What on earth are reverse incentives?
When we want someone (or maybe even ourselves) to perform better we often encourage them with incentives, rewards, and benefits
Unfortunately, they don’t always work (I’m going to share something further down, that does)
But first, let’s look at why traditional incentives don’t work?
* The reward is not big enough
* The reward loses its attractiveness if the goal is hard to achieve
* The person is not motivated by rewards
* It’s the wrong reward
* It’s the wrong goal
* The person has enough rewards from other sources
How do you change the game?
It’s easy to give up on something you don’t already have. You can convince yourself that you never really wanted it or needed it anyway and stop chasing the goal or the dream you have

How does it work?
Each participant chooses to give to, or give up, something they just would never ever want to 🙂 Crazy huh!
If you don’t achieve your goal, you give $1000 to a charity you don’t like, buy a gift for a relative you can’t stand, give up something you love, like coffee or alcohol for a month
The idea of giving up something you already have, already enjoy or alternatively giving something valuable to someone you don’t feel is worthy digs into the emotional connections and fires you
It needs to be something outrageous. In my case, no golf for a month! I might not work real hard for a $1000 reward, but I will work my butt off to avoid missing out on golf for a month 🙂
