Can you choose not to react?
How can this improve your leadership and your results?
Reaction is the automatic response to something that happens. We get angry, we jump, we strike, we defend, we run, we attack, we feel sad, excited, disappointed and a 1000 other automatic reactions
These reactions occur because of
1. Our hard-wired DNA
2. Our past experiences
3. Our present perceptions
It’s really hard to change number 1 our DNA
We can change 2 and 3 quite easily
As leaders and high performers, we need to learn to RESPOND!
In order to respond, we need to pause long enough to:
1. Consider what is really going on
2. Think about how we would normally react
3. Why are we reacting that way
4. Consider the implications of that reaction
4. Choose to respond instead, so that we produce a better outcome
A response is a carefully chosen behaviour, strategy, idea, question or insight.
This is a true sign of elevated leadership and performance.
The carefully considered response helps us build confidence, trust, and respect. It helps us make better choices and therefore achieve better results.
Try it in the next few days, when something happens, choose a response rather than a reaction. You are far more likely to win and gain respect, confidence, and trust.
