Tiny habits and peak performance
When I first started sending out this weekly email, I wanted it to be a small insight, idea or slices of information that could help you Play a Bigger Game at the end of your week (That’s why I chose Wednesdays to send it out).
You’ve got through the intensity of Monday and probably got some stuff done on Tuesday, so Wednesday is a great day to absorb a new concept, give it a try for a few days and build it into your routine for the following week. (I’m keen to know if that’s the way it works for you)
With that in mind, this week’s win is about the little things that make a massive difference.
It’s a crazy busy world (even with Covid) and we struggle with having enough time, implementing new ideas, and breaking out of our normal routines.
We want to shift, adjust, grow and try to create some beneficial habits but we get sucked back into the vortex of busyness and the same old same old.
However, there is hope for us and it comes in the form of TINY HABITS from a book by that name by B J Fogg
The idea is that you can start the tiniest changes by building them onto the back of habitual routines you already have.
I have been doing this since the beginning of the year and it works unbelievably well.
Here are some examples from my daily routine.
I never get time to call my family and friends (Client calls always get priority) So I decided that every time I got in my car, the first call I make is to a friend or family member. It’s a TINY HABIT triggered by getting in the car that has helped me stay in touch with the important people in my life (who, sometimes get neglected)
Every time I sit at my desk in my office I do 5 reps with a grip strengthener (for the bad arthritis from footy) A TINY HABIT that takes 15 seconds but has solved the problem easily
I don’t drink anywhere near enough water (I can go days with just coffees and nothing else) So I have the TINY HABIT of drinking a glass of water every time I enter the kitchen. You would be surprised how much time I spend in the kitchen (mainly looking in the fridge for treats) Again, it takes only seconds but has a big impact
It’s so simple, it’s easy to dismiss as not useful but the reality is these new TINY HABITS become real habits, they take a few seconds to implement but get the ball rolling on change, growth, and progress and that’s what we crave.
The path to peak performance is stacking the little one percent changes one on top of another, so that they accelerate your growth and progress. TINY HABITS is one of those very clever one-percenters.
So, find a regular trigger for your new TINY HABITS and get to work changing the game!
Start with one, get that one rolling and formed into a regular habit, then find another, before you know it, you will be getting stuff done that you never imagined.
PS Would love to hear your thoughts on the Winning Wednesdays email and what TINY HABITS you put into place.
